Who knew that a group of adults could be so engaged by tangrams? Well, in class I did not see just one group but all groups engaged and working on the activities with the tangrams. The idea of helping students to relate to the mathematical content by using hands on, concrete examples really gives students, specially those that are having a difficult time relating/understanding the topic. It was a great approach to working with surface area and give hands on activity to help students grasp the concept.

Tangrams and similar manipulatives can be a useful tool when students are being introduced to a new concept where starting from a concrete example can assist students to get an initial understanding on which they can build further.
