Hands on activities for teaching math allow students at all levels of mathematical understanding to access the material. An example of this was the square folding activity we engaged in during class. Via folding a square of paper into other shapes, (eg. Isosceles triangles, squares, rectangles, etc) students can learn to use their knowledge of geometry to support (justify) their answers. Based on Van Hiele, there are 4 levels of geometric understanding of reasoning and proof. By conducting activities like this one can help move all students forward from their own point of current development.
